Above is a Timelapse of my seascape ‘Sanguine In Spring’, to share with you a glimpse at the process of a digital painting. Enjoy 6+ hours of work in the space of 30 seconds!

What is Digital Art?

Digital art is any artwork that is made using digital technology. In my case this is an iPad and stylus. I use a painting and illustration app called Procreate which contains a multitude of different brushes and creative tools.

You draw on the screen with the stylus like you would a pen onto paper, or a brush onto canvas; and create multiple ‘layers’ to build up your piece, just like you would in traditional mediums. While digital art gives you a lot more freedom to experiment and erase elements you don’t like, it still takes a lot of skill, time and work, and requires you to learn to navigate a whole new medium; to grasp how to use all the tools the app provides, as well as be able to develop an understanding of how the app works and master these tools.

I am still relatively new to digital art, and am still learning and discovering new ways of utilising it to create beautiful artwork.

Why do you like painting digitally?

I love creating digital art on my iPad - I find it the most relaxing way to work as I can paint wherever I like without the worry of packing up all my supplies. I can even paint in bed if I like, which works well for me as I am often struck with inspiration at night.

And sometimes it’s refreshing to eliminate the pressure of not making mistakes.
I’m only human. Mistakes happen. And that’s fine; they help us to grow and learn what to avoid or change next time.

But when there’s an ‘undo’ button at my fingertips, I’m not afraid to experiment and push the boundaries of what I can achieve because I know that if I don’t like something, I can simply remove it with a tap of the screen. I won’t have to fight to try to fix my mistake or worry that my hard work has been ruined. Most of the time I can quickly change or remove the part that didn’t work, and go ahead and try something else.

No mess. No worries.
